can't sleep? this will help 😴

With the start of Daylight Saving Time, most people across North America lost an hour of sleep this weekend. (The contentious, years-long issue is once again being debated in Oregon's legislative session this year.)

For a lot of people—namely night owls and folks with kids, both of which I am—it's a tough shift in the sleep routine. I know I need to be getting in bed earlier, but I often can't fall asleep if I do, and then I wake up completely discombobulated for the rest of the week.

Sometimes I try to read a really boring book in bed, or take a lavender-infused bath to calm the mind or turn off all devices several hours before I plan to hit the sack, but there's another way to naturally induce sleep: eating the right kind of food before bedtime.

Many fruits and vegetables contain small amounts of melatonin (and other sleep-promoting chemicals like tryptophan and magnesium), which help you settle down, fall asleep faster, and stay asleep longer.

So if you're looking to improve your quality of sleep these next couple of weeks, try one of these 13 fruits and vegetables that help you sleep better at night.

(You might even be growing some of them in your garden!)

Speaking of sleep, my favorite mattress brand, Avocado Green Mattress, is running a spring sale right now—save 10% on the original Avocado original Green Mattress or Avocado Vegan Mattress!

I personally own and love my four Avocado mattresses: the Original Green, Green Pillowtop, Eco Organic, and Eco Organic Kids mattress.

Our oldest mattress (a king pillowtop) is going on six years and still looks and feels like new; you can read my honest review of it here.

Our newest mattresses (the two Eco styles) are used in the kids' bunk bed and I have a full review of those coming soon, but after four months so far, I can say this: they're a fantastic (and fairly affordable) option for an organic children's mattress.

Check out the sale here.

This is where I got some of my absolute favorite gardening gear: the sturdiest tomato cages and trellises (which I've owned for over 10 years), Mod Hod baskets (over 5 years), and hanging tool caddies (also more than 5 years and still going strong):
