houseplants that don't need soil to grow 🌿

As gardeners, we're used to rooting through soil and getting a little dirt under our nails, right?

(And that's a good thing... There's a growing body of research that shows beneficial bacteria in soil can actually alter our minds. Kind of like nature's Prozac! 😼)

But mo' soil means mo' problems: fungus gnats, spider mites, that weird white mold, and of course underwatering and overwatering.

You know what solves all those problems? Not having soil at all!

And thankfully, there are quite a lot of houseplants that can actually survive and thrive in nothing but a glass of water indefinitely! You can stick the cuttings in water, get them to root, and grow a whole new plant in nothing but water.

It's not as strange as it sounds—if you're familiar with lucky bamboo (which is actually related to asparagus, and not a true bamboo at all), you've probably only seen it growing in water. And many plants can be propagated in water, but continue growing in it until the plants become too large for the vessels.

(And all of these plants below are on that list.)

I've been filling my home with indoor plants the past year and just ordered this set of 9 propagation stations (Christmas presents to myself). We finally got them hung yesterday in the master bath, facing a large west window.

They're a step up from the random jars and glasses I've been using to root all my cuttings, and this month's project is to trim my plants and get these tubes filled. 😊

P.P.S. If outdoor plants are more your thing, I've had really good experiences with Peaceful Valley in the last year. I've ordered seeds, fruit trees, shrubs, and gardening supplies from them, and a few months ago they took ownership of Annie's Annuals, where I bought many of my edible flowers. (The ones you see in this post.)

The Annie's Annuals website is getting a refresh for 2026, but there's a small collection of their plants on Peaceful Valley until the relaunch.
