I'm questioning all those plant spacing rules... 🤔

You've seen instructions like this on seed packets: Sow seeds 2 inches apart, in rows 18 inches apart. Or, sow 3 seeds together, every 12 inches, in rows 12 inches apart.

What the heck does all of that even mean?!

Spacing suggestions on seed packets can be kinda confusing, because a lot of them are meant for people growing plants in long rows in the ground... not the people growing in standard 4x8 raised beds (or any size raised bed).

I'd guess that most of us attempt to grow in neat, orderly rows in our beds, but the reality is that sometimes we forget to thin our seedlings so they end up growing thisclose together, way far apart, or all zig-zaggy down the line. And if we're truly following the guidelines on our seed packets, we're supposed to be leaving 2 feet of space between zucchini! (But you can actually plant them much closer—like 1 foot apart—if you train them vertically.)

That's why I love intensive plant spacing (aka biointensive planting). Not only does it produce more food than the average garden, it uses the plants themselves to shade and protect the soil, suppress weeds, and lean on each other for support.

If all that sounds good to you, check out my guide on intensive plant spacing (with a handy chart included).

Biointensive planting is one of the lazy methods I practice in real life, and one that I also teach in my online course called—fittingly—Lazy Gardening Academy.

If you're just getting your garden started, or you've had a garden for a while but know it could be better, I bet you'll want to hear what other gardening "rules" I like to break when it comes to more efficient gardening techniques that go against traditional wisdom.

So, I've created three short videos that cover exactly that: three gardening rules that are meant to be broken, and how they can help you build a highly productive yet lower maintenance garden this year.

These videos are a sample of what you'll get inside Lazy Gardening Academy, and even if you feel it's not the right time to sign up for my course, I hope you'll still find them useful!

When you click on the button below, you'll receive a new video every day (for the next three days) in your inbox. No strings attached. No paywalls or ads. Watch these videos at your leisure and put the advice to work in your own yard!
