For most people, the first snow (or even the first hard freeze) ushers in the end of the gardening season. And while you can certainly hang up your trowel and call it good for the year, I think it's more fun to try to keep something going through winter, but within the warmth and comfort of your own home. Do you ever grow food indoors? Not mason jar sprouts or windowsill herbs, or even those potted citrus trees you drag back inside every October to overwinter... but vegetables you can continually harvest until you're ready to get back outside in spring. For me, I'm growing Red Velvet tomato plants in front of a south-facing window. These are petite tomato plants that claim to be happy in 6-inch pots (whaaaaat?!?), but I'm giving them a little more space in 1-gallon pots to maximize their harvest potential. But still, 1-gallon pots for tomatoes? A few years ago I never thought that was possible (most micro varieties are less than desirable in the flavor department) but the new breed of micro tomatoes are different. They don't grow more than 10 inches tall, give or take an inch, and produce loads of sweet, juicy cherry tomatoes all season long. You can get seeds here. What else have I grown indoors? Plenty! No artificial lights needed, just a window that gets good sun all day. And these are plants that don't require a ton of space either, so they'll work in apartments, kitchens, living rooms, or wherever you can carve out a little room for a few pots. If you haven't entered my giveaway to win one of TWO Amazon.com gift cards this week—worth $1,000—be sure to enter here on my blog. The giveaway is only open to Garden Betty followers, so your chances of winning are quite good! (And you won't be added to any sus email lists.) I've also rounded up a few of my favorite Black Friday deals on that page, including:
See anything you like? New deals go live each day through Cyber Monday, so I'll update this blog post if I come across more deals worth sharing. P.S. Here are the 10 easiest vegetables to grow indoors this winter (and year-round) without grow lights. I'm doing tomato plants in 1-gallon pots! |
