Just released!!! 🎉 About two years ago, my longtime book editor asked if I would write a book about Route 66, America's most recognizable roadway, to honor the Route 66 Centennial in 2026. 🇺🇸 It would be very different from all my other cookbooks and on the surface, it didn't seem doable: I knew little about Route 66, none of the recipes would be my own, and was it all going to be diners, drive-ins, and dives? You could only have so many recipes for burgers and pies, after all. But the more I looked into it, the more excited I got—and the more I realized that Americana goes far beyond what people typically think when they envision a Route 66 road trip. I signed on to the project in January 2024 and set off with my hubs and kids last summer on a 10-week road trip across 8 states (plus a few states in between, since Oregon is a pretty far drive from either endpoint of Route 66 😄). To be honest, this was my hardest book yet to develop—the driving was the easy part. The end result is more than 6,000 miles driven, 20 months of research, hundreds of people interviewed, thousands of photos taken, and 66 recipes ultimately compiled from some of the most iconic Route 66 establishments (a few of which existed before there was even a Route 66) as well as newer restaurants that define the Mother Road today. This is a bucket-list trip that fully encapsulates the American spirit and generous small-town hospitality. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share all the stories and recipes from the people and places that helped shape this historic highway and persevered through 100 years of enormous change.
At its core, my book is about the small businesses of America and I would LOVE it if you supported your local independent bookstore or local-owned retailer, if possible. (All bookstores are able to order The Route 66 Cookbook by Linda Ly if they don't have it in stock yet. Just ask!) And yes, the book is available worldwide from all the major online retailers as well. Thank you in advance for showing this book some love. ❤️ Buy it from:
And if you see my book "in the wild," please tag @gardenbetty or email me a photo! I'd love to see where it's ended up! 😄 P.S. If The Route 66 Cookbook isn't your thing but you know someone who's an armchair traveler, history buff, lover of all things Americana, or always down to try new recipes, please share this email or tell them about it! Thank you. 🙏 |
