My husband just told me that he found a bottle of limoncello in the freezer from when... let's just say, it's verrrrry smooth and aged by now. 😅 (Hey, we made a lot back then.) The zesty, lemony Italian liqueur feels pretty fancy when you break it out and serve it in little cordial glasses, but it's actually very easy to make. And if you have a lemon tree or access to organic lemons (which are fully in season right now), limoncello makes a lovely homemade holiday gift or host/hostess gift. The only catch is—you need to start it now if you want it to be ready by the end of the month.
🍋 What does it taste like? This is the kind of thing that gets better with age, like fine wine. Limoncello is more of a dessert-y drink, best sipped when it's chilled as a digestif. But it can be used in other cocktails and even in cakes. (I've got some suggestions below.) It has a bright, intense flavor without the sharpness of fresh lemon zest or lemon juice. It's refreshing with just a hint of that "liquid layer," as I like to call it (alcoholic warmth). You can adjust how sweet or strong you want to make it by using more or less simple syrup, or even by changing up the type of lemon you use (Meyer lemons will be sweeter than Eureka lemons, for example). And you don't have to stick solely to lemons—I've got a recipe here for orangecello and grapefruitcello too (and you can use any other citrus you have on hand). So what are some ways you can use limoncello? Besides just sipping it straight, you can make:
What else do you think it would be good in? P.S. Don't wait—start your batch of limoncello now to give as gifts! P.P.S. Need more gift ideas? All of my gift guides are recently updated with thoughtful recommendations for plant lovers, cooks, and outdoor enthusiasts: |
