Last week I wrote about curing your garlic harvest so it can last several months in storage. (I've personally had garlic bulbs stay fresh for up to 11 months in my garage!) But not all garlic has this long of a storage life, nor is all garlic suitable for every climate. It's starting to be that time of year when seed suppliers are offering preorders for seed garlic, and from what I've experienced, most of the more reputable sites sell out quickly. If you need seed garlic for planting in October, you have to preorder it soon (else you'll be stuck with whatever variety arrives in local nurseries in fall, which are NOT always the most ideal for your garden). My hands-down favorite has always been Music garlic: a Porcelain type with huge cloves (think: 4 to 6 cloves per bulb). It's really a cook's dream! I mean, look at this beauty: Yes, that's just one clove! The last couple years I've ordered seed garlic from Peaceful Valley, and this year I'm trying a new Porcelain type called Romanian Red, which is known for its intense heat, strong garlic aroma, and large cloves (around 5 to 8 per bulb). (Peaceful Valley also carries Music garlic, if you want to try that.) But if you're not sure what type of garlic to buy for planting, I recommend reading through my guide on how to choose the best garlic for your garden (taking into account your climate, flavor preferences, storage life, and desired number of cloves per bulb).
It's not as simple as just planting the garlic you buy from the store!
