where to find free or cheap seeds

Who else has an embarrassingly spendy habit when it comes to shiny new seeds? 🙋🏻‍♀️

I've been diving into my seed catalogs this week and I've circled at least 100 varieties of seeds I want to try. 😆 Obviously I can't get them all, but I do have my eye on a few really interesting cultivars. (I'll share what I'm ordering in next week's email.)

For garden staples where I'm not picky about the variety (things like peas, lettuce blends, arugula, and pickling cucumbers), I'm able to save a bit of money by knowing the best places to find free or cheap seeds.

I'm sure you've noticed in recent years: shrinkflation has hit the seed industry too. Quantities have gone down while the price of seeds has stayed the same (or even gone up).

It's not uncommon to see $5 packets of open-pollinated seeds and hybrids going for even more.

Although I totally get that a great deal of R&D goes into patented hybrid seeds, it's hard to justify an $11 packet that only gives you 15 tomato seeds—which you can't even save. (Talking to you, Gurney's.)

That's why I'm sharing my top 8 sources for quality seeds on a budget, along with tips for scoring the best deals year-round.

(I also share how you can get seeds for free if you work or volunteer for an educational or nonprofit organization.)
